Ancient texts inform us about the existence of the human spirit before birth
In this post we are going to speak about the existence of the human spirit before birth and even before that spirit even inhabited the flesh in the womb. The foundation of this discussion lies in the Book of Enoch and in the Holy Bible.
I must assure you of the validity of the Book of Enoch, since the writers of the Holy Bible often cross referenced the Book of Enoch many times without mentioning Enoch’s name. Even Jesus Christ quoted often from the Book of Enoch. Phrases like the “Son of Man” originated in the Book of Enoch and we know that he was truly referenced by Jews thanks to Apostle Jude who said:
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints – Jude 1:14
That citation by Apostle Jude is found in the Book of Enoch and was repeated by Moses in Deuteronomy 33: 2, giving us one example of how Enoch was cited quite liberally in the Scriptures:
And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.
I encourage you to read the Book of Enoch since it will help you to understand the Holy Scriptures.
About the Book of Enoch, one of the key sources for the existence of the human spirit before earthly life
The Book of Enoch is one of the earliest books in human history and it was written by an Apostle called Enoch. We know that his source is valid because he was cited in the scriptures as a descendant of Adam and the son of Jared. Additionally, his writings are quoted quite liberally throughout the scripture even though he was not mentioned by name.
There is another Enoch who is a descendant of Cain, but this Enoch of whom we speak is a descendant of Seth, the son of Adam:
And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:
And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:
And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
The Book of Enoch refers to God as the Father of Spirits
The first premise that I am making is that the human spirit existed before time because humans came from the Spirit of the Eternal God, Genesis 2: 7 says that God breathed into Adam and he became a living soul. When we cross reference in the Book of Enoch, the Book of Parables, we discover that God is therefore referred to as the Lord of Spirits about seventy eight times.
This concept is carried over in the Holy Bible in the following texts which further clarify that God is the source or originator of spirits:
And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation? – Numbers 16: 22
Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation – Numbers 27: 16
Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! – Hebrews 12: 9READ Human Spirit: How To Transfer Gifts And Strength To Your Child By The Laying On Of Hands
There is a difference between spirits living in the heaven and spirits living in the earth
The Book of Enoch further tells us that there are spirits living in the heavens and spirits living in the earth. Here are some references about the spirits of heaven:
“The spiritual ones of heaven – Enoch Book 1, chapter 15: 7
“You were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life and immortal for all generations of the world – a reference to the 200 angels that left their place in heaven and went to the earth to marry women – Enoch Book 1, chapter 15: 7.
“As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling…” – Book 1 of Enoch, chapter 15: 10
During one of the times in which God translated him into the seventh heaven ((Book of Parables, Chapter 71: 5), Enoch saw an innumerable number of spirits there, although he did not tell us their identify. However, he described them as
Thousands of thousands by then thousands by ten thousands, a multitude beyond number (Enoch 40: 1 & 2).
Given the similarity with Revelation 5: 11, it is possible that these could have been angels
And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

References to the spirits of the earth
“He filleth the earth with spirits…” – Enoch 39: 11 & 12.
“…the spirits of earth which were born upon the earth.” – Book 1, chapter 15: 10
What we need to understand fully is that the body is only a physical structure and vehicle for the spirit. While it does not appear that the Book of Enoch or the scriptures directly mentions human spirits living in the heavenly realm before time, we know that we come from an Eternal God who dwells in that dimension. We need to therefore take time to care and nurture the inner man or spirit because that part of us is just as important as the body which we buff, exercise, nourish and take care of. The spirit of humans need spiritual elements for sustenance. One of those elements is the Word of God.
What do the scriptures say about the spirit of humans under development?
In Psalm 139: 14 -16, the scriptures talk about the development of the human structure in the womb. The texts show that God writes books about each human and that they even contain the plan of our body. This shows that each human spirit that is sent into the earth is not accidental and that we exist in God’s thinking before we are even born into the earth:
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[fn]
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
We can safely infer the human spirit is formed at the time of the conception of the human being
Often the question is asked as to the time that a fetus is viable. It is my view that the human spirit is placed into the body at the time of conception. I make this inference based on the Garden of Eden parallel in which God formed the body and breathed His spirit into it. In the corollary, I infer that the spirit is placed simultaneously into the body at the time of human conception. Conception represents the merging of two living cells together and this symbolizes life.
Furthermore, the scriptures teach us that he body is dead without the spirit (James 2: 26). It is important that people of faith strengthen this foundation in their minds because it would strengthen the whole debate against abortion. When we read the Book of Enoch we see that the smiting of the the unborn the fetus in the womb is a demonic activity that was taught to humans by the one of the two hundred angels that left heaven and came to earth in order to marry women.
A second example given in the word of Prophet Jeremiah shows that God knows humans and makes plans for humans before they come into the earth. Since God says that He knew Jeremiah before birth, this text forces us to ask whether or not humans preexist in a spiritual body in heaven:
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations – Jeremiah 1: 5
There are other examples in scriptures for example the that God knows us and has a plan for us before birth. An angel appeared to Samson’s parents and gave them specific information about the unborn child:
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death – Judges 13: 6, 7.
We think also about Jesus and how the the the elements of his birth were known intimately to God. Jews knew that the Messiah would be born from a virgin. They know His exact name and circumstances of His birth, life and death.
In the final example, the Angel Gabriel appeared to the father of John the Baptist and revealed to him that he and his wife Elizabeth would have this child and that his name he would be John. The Angel also told Zecharias that the child would be the forerunner prophet of the Most High as prophesied by the ancient prophets. This is another indication that God knew us before he formed us in the belly (Luke 1: 13 – 17).
The fetus in the womb is a living person who has a spirit that can hear
It is important that parents understand that the baby in the womb has a living, active spirit that can hear. This is shown when Mary the mother of Christ visited Elizabeth the pregnant mother of John the Baptist.
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost (Luke 1: 39 – 41).
This text speaks to us about the importance of preparing and strengthening the spirit of the child before birth. I recommend that pregnant women strengthen the spirit of that baby even with the Word of God, prayer, praise and worship.
The mother should be careful regarding the kind of environment in which the unborn child is placed and protect her child from ungodly influences. John leapt in the womb because he was a spiritual being that was conscious, alert, active and living.
I hope that this post will help you to rethink how you view the unborn child, especially in light of some of the challenges they face in the unborn world. I believe that earth is behind in its development because of the abortion of millions of unborn children. They were never given an opportunity to carry out their assignment and purpose in the earth.
As I conclude, I ask that you share this post and pray that the Lord would bless, strengthen and keep you in the upcoming year.
